Statement
November 2007
When I see yellow-white light falling onto a bowl and plum on a windowsill, I am engaged in a hunt. I hunt the place between the bowl and plum and windowsill and my vision. I hunt for the overlapping energies of what is seen and what is not seen, patterns that evolve through a dialectic of order with seeming chaos that evolves into a new order. This new order is what I am after.
I am intrigued with how the purely formal issues of transcribing volumes in space onto a two-dimensional surface can begin to describe the location of this energy between the seen and unseen and its resulting form. Positive/negative shapes, real/implied lines, structure/fragmentation shown through color and light in oil become the surface that holds the energy.
I am interested in the process of seeing and my way of working is greatly influenced by Modernism and the Western tradition of painting. My work is most influenced by Cezanne, Morandi and Bonnard. I am also interested in the process of feeling the forms and spaces and in aligning myself with the intrinsic quality of things, a more Eastern way of being. I am concerned with the intentional dialogue between empty/full, interior/exterior, tearing down/building up, still-life/landscape, shape/line. My consistent quest is for painting with a grand unity of moving relationships which can only result from the resolution of disunity.
