EMILY AMY GALLERY is pleased to present You Can’t Get There From Here, our first solo show for Atlanta-based artist Jennifer Cawley. Cawley, who is currently completing her MFA at SCAD-Atlanta, has been inspired and encouraged by her colleagues who are in the MFA program as well. Therefore, not only will Cawley’s new body of work be on view, but also the works of many of her fellow MFA candidates in printmaking and bookmaking. The title of the show encompasses both Cawley’s constant obsession with the otherworldly as well as the impending yet challenging climb of this collection of artists towards their completion of the Masters program. Please join us in celebrating the opening reception of the exhibition, Friday, November 30th, from 7-10 pm.

Cawley’s work always teeters towards surrealism and this new body of work is no different. In the paintings, prints, and books that are featured in the show Cawley is dissecting sequences, processes and the proper order of things. She notes, “When the brain does not follow expected sequences to problem solve or synthesize information, the result is an alternate perception that may not make sense to the average person.” It is those interrupted paths that distort perception that interest Cawley the most, evidenced by pieces such as “Follow/Forget” in which a phantom hand appears as a possible portal to or from another world beckoning us to either follow or forget. While the new body of work is quite a departure from past series, as the childhood nursery rhyme and fairy tale imagery has disappeared to make way for fractals and haunting human forms, the messages are still similar: something captivating lies within a world that we do not inhabit and Cawley is constantly trying to capture it.

You Can’t Get There From Here features works by a wonderful selection of SCAD MFA candidates, curated by Robert Brown and Cynthia Lollis, professors from the program. Some of the artists presented include: Alison Batley, Aaron Brown, Elizabeth Castaldo, Bora Choi, Molly Coleman, Devan Dieterle, Jarrett Durney, Cathleen Ficht, Carina Maye, Erin McManness, Jennifer Nakasato, Cassidy Russel, Megan Riley, and Freda Sue.  Please join us in welcoming many of the exhibiting artists to Emily Amy Gallery to celebrate the opening of their upcoming show, Friday November 30th. Cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres will be served.
